Taking Playful Utility Beyond Footwear

Crocs built a cultural identity around comfort, personalization, and not taking yourself too seriously. We explored how those same equities could extend into a new category without relying on another collaboration.

The Opportunity

Crocs had already moved beyond being simply a shoe: its brand stood for utility made playful, low-effort comfort, and bold self-expression.

Where else could its audience use playful utility?

Research

We focused on Gen Z, an audience drawn to personal curation, nostalgia, individuality, and functional fun. Travel emerged as an opportunity as younger travelers increasingly favored more frequent, shorter trips.

Tension

The luggage category largely competes through sleekness, luxury, and status. Crocs occupies almost the opposite territory: playful, practical, expressive, and proudly unserious.

The Insight

Crocs’ real equity isn’t the clog itself. It’s the freedom to turn something functional into something unmistakably yours.

If Jibbitz transformed footwear into a canvas for identity, travel could become the next expression of that behavior.

The Strategic Move

Turn travel into a form of low-stakes self-expression.

Instead of creating another suitcase that signals status, we extended Crocs’ combination of utility, ease, and personalization into a category where sameness still dominates.

The Extension

Crocs Carry

A customizable luggage system bringing Crocs’ recognizable material language, playful proportions, and personalization model from your feet to wherever you’re headed.

Bringing It to Life

Crocs Carry translated the brand into luggage through Croslite-inspired construction, recognizable ventilation holes, bold colors, and surfaces designed for personalization. The system allowed travelers to customize their luggage with charms and accessories just as they would a pair of Crocs.

The Outcome

The final extension demonstrated how Crocs could move beyond footwear by expanding the behaviors it already owns: utility, low effort, and self-expression.

Rather than borrowing relevance from another brand, Crocs Carry gave Crocs a category it could make distinctly its own.
