Back to Real: Making Beauty Simple Again
Glossier built a category-defining brand around authenticity, simplicity, and a community-first approach to beauty. As the brand expanded, we explored how it could return to those founding strengths while building a more focused path forward.

The Problem
Glossier grew from a cult beauty brand into a billion-dollar business, but by 2025 its valuation had fallen below its previous highs and the brand was working toward renewed profitability and long-term growth.
At the same time, an expanding product portfolio, discontinued experiments, and consumer frustration pointed to a brand that had become bloated.
The Diagnosis
Glossier originally stood apart through a highly edited approach to beauty and a community-centered model that turned customers into collaborators. Over time, many of its visual and product conventions became commonplace across the category while Glossier itself became more complex.
The Tension
Glossier had grown by giving people more, but its original power came from making beauty feel like less work.
The challenge wasn't to invent a new Glossier. It was to recover what had made Glossier distinctive in the first place.
The Insight
Beauty had become increasingly crowded with products, routines, and expectations.
People didn't need Glossier to tell them what beauty should look like. They needed the freedom and confidence to make it their own.
The Strategic Move
Return Glossier to effortless empowerment.
We repositioned the brand around freedom and confidence through authenticity and simplicity, bringing its original philosophy back into focus.
The Big Idea
Get Real.
A return to the qualities Glossier had always had permission to own: real people, uncomplicated routines, and beauty without unnecessary effort.
Rather than reinvent the brand, the strategy sharpened what was already worth protecting.
Bringing It to Life
We preserved recognizable equities like soft color, clarity, and airiness while returning the brand to a bottom-up, community-centered ethos.
The product portfolio was simplified around multifunctional essentials designed for real needs across life stages—from acne care to sun protection and anti-aging.
The Outcome
The final strategy gave Glossier a path back to real: less complexity, stronger brand equities, and a product system built around effortless everyday beauty.
